for a life worth living
We all grew up hearing that an "Apple a Day keeps the doctor away".  Exactly what are the health benefits of apples?
1.  Dental benefits:  Eating an apple does not replace brushing your teeth.  However, chewing an apple stimulates the production of saliva which reduces tooth decay by lowering the levels of bacteria.
2.  Reduces the risk of Alzheimer's.  What?  A new study showed that apples improve brain function.
3.  Curbs all sorts of cancers.  The American Association for Cancer Research states that eating flavonoid rich apples could help reduce your risk of pancreatic cancer by up to 22%.  The apple peel has a compound that have potent anti-growth activities against cancer cells in the liver, colon and breast.
4.  Reduces cholesterol.  The soluble fiber in apples binds with the cholesterol and helps flush it out of your system.
5.  Prevents gallstones.  Gallstones form when there is too much cholesterol.  See #4.
6.  Control your weight.  The fiber in apples keep you from getting hungry so often.
7.  Detoxify your liver.  (This is for all you alcohol consumers).  Actually, the liver is constantly filtering toxins from foods, preservatives and what we drink.
8.  Boost your immune system.  The antioxidants are proven to fortify your immune system, especially when stressed.
9.  Prevent cataracts.  A recent long term study suggest that people who have a diet rich in fruits are 10-18% less likely to develop cataracts.
10.  Finally, apples help beat diarrhea and constipation.  How can it do both?  The fiber in apples can pull water out of your colon to keep things moving along when needed or it can absorb water from you colon to show stuff down.

So, how can you use more apples and be healthy?  I don't recommend apple pie daily.  Come to the October cooking class and see other recipes using apples.
